Portable companion: traveling with an iPad
If you’re looking for a travel companion, the iPad is hard to beat. It fits in your backpack, supplies an unlimited amount of information on the go and never has to stop for a break – unless the battery dies. It’s an expensive item – its purchase certainly pushed the limits of my frugality – but it’s well worth the convenience it provides while traveling. Booking, currency conversion and internet access are a cinch on the tablet.
Getting online overseas
If you can, find a free Wi-Fi hotspot to set up shop. The iPad – and other tablets – have Wi-Fi built in. And you also have the option of 3G. But 3G access overseas can cost some money. If you’re planning on going the 3G route, you’ll want to check with your provider on roaming deals. You can also save some cash by purchasing an international SIM card in the U.S., or buying a SIM card at your destination.
Avoiding theft
Tablets are hot-ticket items for theft overseas, so it’s important to take extra precautions when traveling with one. Keep it in a case strapped to the front of your body when in transit. If you’re going to use it in public, try to find a secure place that’s quiet.
In case your iPad is stolen or misplaced, Apple offers an app that allows you to track your iPad and remotely erase data. The app is called Find My iPhone but works with an iPad, iTouch or Mac.
Why travel with a tablet?
Tablets offer the functionality of a laptop without the weight. You can find currency conversion apps and restaurant recommendations on the fly and download movies and books while sitting on the train. If you’re looking to save some money on international calling, you can download Skype, which offers free video calling via internet to other Skype users. Skype also has fairly reasonable international calling plans to landlines.
Do you like traveling with an iPad, or do you use something else as your portable travel companion?
